Klavdiy Mamonov and Makar Psaltyrnikov find themselves at the center of a tangled investigation into the murder of their business partner, Dmitry Matveyev. A housemaid, Maria Goltsova, is falsely accused of the crime. The murder was marked by extreme cruelty: while the victim was unconscious, she was thrown under the wheels of a thermal locomotive.
