“Red and White” (“Lucien Leuwen”) is Stendhal’s second major novel, written after “Red and Black” in the years 1834–36. The work remained unfinished because the author feared a negative reaction from the July monarchy. Stendhal searched for a suitable title for a long time to reflect the content of the novel. The option “Red and White” hints at the political struggle between the republican and legitimist parties. However, starting in February 1835, the manuscript uses the title “Lucien Leuwen,” corresponding to the name of the main character—a typical practice for literature of that time.
