Patrick Süskind’s first literary success came with his one-act monologue “The Conductor”—written in the summer of 1980. After the premiere at the Munich theater in 1981, the play became one of the most popular in Europe. Masterful command of language, the author’s subtle humor, and unmistakable sympathy for his lonely and quirky hero set the work apart from the many one-day theatrical pieces. Critics noted that although Süskind did not play the double bass, he managed to create what “no composer has written—” a melancholic work for one double bass.”
