Description
Herbert Wells is a classic of English literature, one of the founders of the science-fiction genre, the author of the novels “The Time Machine,” “The War of the Worlds,” and “The Island of Doctor Moreau.”

“Wheels of Fate” is the author’s early humorous novel, depicting the “bicycle fever” in late-19th-century England. It is known that Wells decided to write something bright and realistic after critics condemned his previous book, “The Time Machine,” for being excessively dark.

England, late 19th century—the height of the “bicycle fever”: both ladies and gentlemen are taken with long bicycle rides. Mr. Hoopdriver, a salesman at one of London’s shops, is still very young, but he’s already tired of life and of dull, monotonous work. One day, he finally gets the long-awaited vacation and sets off on a ten-day journey along the picturesque coast of southern Britain. A few hours later, the young man meets a charming young lady in a grey cycling suit, riding with her brother. But very soon Hoopdriver realizes that the companion is not the girl’s relative at all—and she’s in danger…
