Description

Over the sun-scorched, sleepy steppe hovered fat Crimean bumblebees. The unbearable July heat had forced all the inhabitants of the old village of Orta-Abla to hide in the shade. The settlement seemed dead; only from one solid house on the very edge came certain sounds, and horses harnessed to carriages standing nearby snorted. At some distance neighbors crowded together, glancing at the door and whispering quietly among themselves. At last a priest appeared in the doorway, crossed himself, approached the crowd, and said softly: “She is passing away, the poor dear.”
