For three nights of Samhain, the doors between worlds open, and their inhabitants can make deals with each other. The living and the dead meet at the Great Fair, where there are no rules. A red fox knows the way there—just beware the procession of souls and return in time!
The plot is built around heartfelt vows given to the universe by powerful beings of the in-between. In search of happiness—or trying to avoid suffering—they become prisoners of their own promises. It’s surprising that the one who agrees to help them is a young girl who, without even realizing it, gradually becomes a witch throughout her adventures. Accompanying her is a fire demon who hands out keys to the doors between worlds. He has his own interests in any game!
This bright, thoroughly magical story would be perfect for a Miyazaki-style adaptation, with its unusual fairy-tale worlds and a deep philosophical concept of good and evil. It features elements of Southern European folklore as well as the author’s own bestiary. Strongly recommended to read in autumn, as the fireplace crackles.
