When Nina Knew

A new novel by David Grossman, an International Booker Prize laureate, tells the story of three women—Vera, Ninna, and Gili—about their connections and shared pain. On the occasion of Vera’s ninetieth birthday, her granddaughter Gili decides to make a film about her grandmother, and the family travels to the former prison island of Gol(i) Otok. There, for the first time, Vera recounts the entire story of her life, including the difficult choice that led to her imprisonment and left her six-year-old daughter Ninna alone. The story is based on the real life of a Croatian woman and explores how a single event can change not only one person’s life, but the whole family’s.
