Anne Michaels is a well-known Canadian poet and author, recognized with many international awards. Her works have become global bestsellers and have been adapted into films and translated into 45 languages. Her third novel, “Held,” made the Booker Prize 2024 and Prix Femina Étranger shortlist, and also won the Prix Transfuge. This work is a “philosophical novel in episodes,” spanning the period from 1910 to 2025, exploring the boundaries between the material and the ineffable, the mortal and the spiritual (according to The New Yorker). At the heart of the plot is a photographer who returns from World War I to his wife and opens his studio again, where ghosts appear on his photo plates. This is only the beginning of a “masterfully compressed epic” (as the Washington Post notes), where “out of the fragments of love and memory… dreams and hopes of four generations are formed” (The Guardian).
