Denis Davydov—lieutenant general, hero of the Patriotic War of 1812, as well as a legendary poet and memoirist—was one of the initiators and leaders of the partisan movement. The memoirs, notes, essays, and articles of Davydov included in this book are an important source for the history of the Napoleonic wars and a monument of Russian literature of the 1820s–1830s. The book also publishes Denis Davydov’s main work, “An Experience in the Theory of Partisan Action,” in which he left a theoretical development of the organization of the partisan movement in the enemy’s rear. For illustrations, engravings from 19th-century books devoted to the Patriotic War of 1812 were used.
