You might not have thought about it before, but each of us lives according to certain rules of behavior. For some, that’s morality. For others, it’s religion. And for me, it’s the “Bro Code.”

For many years, men have subconsciously tried to follow this code, without having the slightest idea about things as basic as: is it allowed to hug a bro? If I’m invited to a bro’s wedding, do I really need to bring a gift? Is it possible to sleep with a bro’s sister, his mom, or both?

In front of you is a set of rules of conduct that all true bros have followed since the dawn of civilization… or even earlier. Originally, the “Bro Code” existed only in an oral form (ugh!), so I traveled the whole world to collect the scattered fragments of the “Code” and assemble this great work, departing from the original only to add and specify it (ugh! twice).

I didn’t set out to write a guidebook “How to Be a Real Bro,” but I’m sure that if men all over the world had taken it that way and passed this code down from generation to generation, tears would inevitably have shown up in my eyes. But they wouldn’t have rolled out of them. Otherwise, that would violate Article 41: “A bro never cries.”
