Description
City businessmen divide the inheritance after the owner of a textile factory dies; unknown attackers strike at one time at the bourgeoisie, then at labor leaders. Across the country, everything rises up against the war—except the government—and a girl, a student at a Catholic school, spends her days in dreams. A monk-organist arrives at a women’s monastery as its spiritual advisor and, with his own eyes, sees what happens to people when rules and dogmas matter more to them than God, music, and beauty. And the same girl, in desperation, tries to break free from the monastery walls, tortured by doubts about whether her choice is right. Jaume Cabré (born 1947) is one of the leading figures of Catalan literature: his works have been translated into dozens of languages, with total print runs exceeding a million, and his major novel “I Confess” has received numerous awards. The trilogy “The Book of Fishes” is the source of his fictional world and the constant backdrop to his life (the model for “Fishes” was Tarrasà, Cabré’s hometown); the novels “The Map of the Cobweb” and “Fray Junoy” have also been honored with prestigious prizes. Here, revolution is at once both ridiculous and terrifying, but the ever-present detective question “Who benefits?” drowns out any romantic undertones, while the temptation to control everyone around you—even the closest of people—proves irresistible. Here it is especially clear: where there is no music, there is no God. Yet the church authorities are obsessed with the desire to destroy the monk whose “crimes” are nothing more than steadfast faith and love for music and people.
