In the 1920s in the USSR, a satirical weekly magazine called “Behemoth” was published in an enormous print run for those times — 60,000 copies. The subscription advertisement said: “The magazine is issued in a large format, following the model of the best multi-colored publications, with the participation of first-class literary and artistic talent. All annual subscribers will receive a free premium ‘The Great Encyclopedia of Behemoth.’”
The editorial board, which immediately set course to expand ties with the rabkor (worker-correspondent) movement, set the task of creating a truly workers’ satire, the main target of which were bureaucrats, NEPmen, moonshiners, swindlers, and hooligans. In different years, popular satirical writers such as A. Bukhov, V. Voinov, M. Zoshchenko, E. Gard and others actively collaborated with “Behemoth.”
In this collection, you’ll find audio versions of selected works from the issue of “Behemoth’s Encyclopedia” — “Behemothnik,” as well as the best works of Russian classics of humorous short stories — by A. P. Chekhov, M. A. Bulgakov, and I. Ilf.
