In 1944, young Aki and her parents were released from the Manzanar camp, where they were placed after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor—like many other Americans of Japanese descent. The Iko family was forced to leave California, which had become their home, and move to Chicago, where Aki’s sister Rose had already relocated earlier. However, before they arrive, Rose dies after being hit by a subway train. Authorities consider it suicide, but Aki doubts that her strong and cheerful sister could make such a choice. Feeling that there is a lot hidden in this case, Aki decides to figure out what happened on her own.
