Igor Samoylovich Lisevich (May 26, 1932 — January 27, 2000)
Graduated from MGIMO in 1955; a graduate student of the Institute of Oriental Languages at Moscow State University in 1961. From 1961 he worked at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences (RAS), where he was head of the sector of comparative religious studies. He was the chief research fellow at the A. M. Gorky Institute of World Literature of the RAS and a member of the International Academy of Informatization.
Doctoral dissertation—"Literary Thought in China at the Turning Point between Ancient Times and the Middle Ages" (1979). Investigating the problem of cultural interconnections, Igor Samoylovich denies the idea of isolation of centers of ancient civilization. In Lisevich’s works, the Chinese traditional world model is analyzed—its elements (dao, de, qi, usin) and their role in the formation of Chinese literary thought.
He translated and studied the main Daoist canon, "The Book of the Way and Virtue" ("Daodejing"), noting its mystical, meditative aspect and parallels with a number of ancient esoteric teachings. He participated in developing a hypothesis about cosmic paleocontact. At a number of international conferences on the problem of SETI he spoke about the danger of contact with a hypothetical "extraterrestrial intelligence."
