"The Dagger of Discord" is a story of modern Romeo and Juliet—more precisely, not quite modern; by some details you can determine that the action takes place around the 1960s–70s of the 20th century somewhere in Italy. However, neither time nor place matters, because the story of love and discord is immortal.
Long ago, a stingy duchess lived who loved bickering and intrigues. For amusement (and with a far-reaching goal of turning her vassals against each other), she gives the two best families a rare “work” involving a dagger in precious scabbards: one family gets the scabbards, the other gets the weapon. A joke with meaning: these two families must be joined by a wedding. Guests arrive, gifts are prepared—and in the commotion, the gift disappears.
Both families accuse each other of theft and lying—and the feud lasts for many centuries.
Genevieve Medinos and Bartholomew Mediches meet by accident far from home, not knowing that they belong to feuding families. They don’t even have time to exchange last names—yet, of course, they manage to fall in love, and, of course, for life. But to live together this life, in love and harmony, they will have to reconcile families full of contradictions and prejudices—and to do that, find the dagger that started the ancient feud.
