“Carmilla” is one of the earliest works about vampires in the history of literature, written 25 years before Bram Stoker’s famous “Dracula,” which was inspired by Le Fanu’s writings. The story is told from the practice of a psychiatrist doctor, Martin Hesselius, as recounted by a young girl named Laura. Together with her father she lives in a castle amid endless forests of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and leads an secluded life. Everything changes with the arrival of a beautiful stranger named Carmilla—then strange events begin: peasants die one after another, Laura falls ill and withers before her eyes, and at night she is tormented by nightmares. Who is the mysterious Carmilla really, and what connection does she have to what is happening? In addition to this novella, the collection includes other stories by Dr. Hesselius: “Green Tea,” “The Old Acquaintance,” “Judge Harbottle,” and “Room in the Hotel ‘The Flying Dragon’.”
