Paustovsky, deeply engrossed in nature, in his work “Kara-Bugaz” explores the interaction between humans and the surrounding world. Inspired by his love of nature, he describes the development of salt deposits in the barren gulf of the Caspian from different viewpoints. The novella shows the selflessness of Russian officers and scientists, as well as endless and frightening desert shores that provoke superstitious fear in sailors and nomads. Paustovsky compellingly developed this theme further in “The Golden Rose.” The collection also includes novellas “Colchis,” “The Captain Gernet’s Theory,” and “Lakefront Front.”
