Description

Operation “Typhoon” was the swan song of the Wehrmacht. Never again—neither before nor after—did the German General Staff gather such forces to carry out a task: the Army Group “Center” and three tank groups. And in our story, this plan was accompanied by success. The rapid and crushing defeat of three Soviet fronts opened the way for the invaders toward Moscow. Only the courage of the soldiers and commanders of the newly formed Western Front, and Zhukov’s iron will, deprived the enemy of that possibility. Later they would call it a “Russian military miracle.” However, in the history of the encirclement and defeat of the Western Front there is a moment when Operation “Typhoon” could have gone along a different scenario. Probably the differences would have been minor, yet important—if, during its course, several random people had not gotten involved.
