We present an audio version of Alexandre Dumas’s novel about the founder of the American Navy, the famous sailor John Paul Jones. In Dumas’s novels, real historical figures often became the heroes—but mostly they were representatives of noble aristocratic dynasties or royal families. Here, however, the hero is an ordinary American sailor, though immensely popular at the beginning of the nineteenth century. He became the only winner against the British at sea in an entire century. Songs and ballads were composed in his honor, and some of them are performed even to this day.
