“Lady” is a poetic and profound story about a boy with the extraordinary name Zeide, which keeps him safe from the Angel of Death; about his mother Judith, whose arrival turned the life of a small village upside down; and about three suitors for her heart. Each of these men considers the main hero his son and shares with him his view on life.
“Like a Few Days” is not a typical coming-of-age novel. Meir Shalev doesn’t separate past and present, doesn’t confine his characters to the patterns of their predecessors and successors. As he says, people’s endless attempts to truly know their ancestors may never succeed. In his story, a human life becomes surprisingly simple, and the path of moral growing up and becoming a person fits into four meals of the main hero and one of his “fathers”. Yet this simplicity doesn’t make life any less amazing—rich, and uniquely beautiful.
The novel received the Scrivere per Amore literary prize as the best work about love. The award is presented to writers in Verona on Shakespeare’s Juliet’s birthday, September 16.
