Former banker Borkman, having served a sentence for embezzlement, voluntarily shuts himself away on the second floor of his own house and lives on dreams of the coming “return.” Downstairs, his wife, Gunhild, raises their son, obsessed with the idea of restoring the family’s honor, but the sudden arrival of the rival sister—who once also loved Borkman—brings to the surface years of lingering pain and calls the young man’s fate into question. A drama about the collapse of great ambitions and about the cold that ruthless ambition is capable of planting in the human soul.
