“Your husband was in a car accident and is in extremely critical condition,” the doctor says.
“How bad is it?” I ask, barely moving my lips, which have dried up from worry.
“He hasn’t regained consciousness yet. But his younger sister came to quickly. Fortunately, the pregnancy was able to be preserved.
“What sister?” The words burst out of me, because I know for sure: my husband has no sister.
“The one who was with him in the car at the time of the accident. Shall I take you to see her?”
On the way to the airport, my husband didn’t suffer alone—his lover was there with him. Right before the due date, they decided to give themselves a vacation in Italy. When he finally comes to his senses, it turns out that part of his past has been erased from his memory, and among what’s forgotten is her. Convenient timing. I’ll make sure, though, that he remembers every detail and understands what he’ll have to pay for it.
