A. F. Veltman is a Russian writer who enjoyed widespread fame in Pushkin’s time. This collection includes his works from the 1840s. For the first time, a fairy-tale novel “New Emelya, or Transformations” is presented to modern readers. The historical story “Rayna, Queen of Bulgaria” tells about Prince Svyatoslav’s campaign to Bulgaria. “Memoirs of Bessarabia” and a series of works connected with them (“Ilya Larin,” “Two Majors,” and others) belong to the period of A. S. Pushkin’s southern exile.
