Zarnitsa was destined to be born in harsh times. The country stands on the threshold of a great war. Rulers—Masters—are concerned only with replenishing the treasury. The Fiery Fathers burn out any filth with hot iron. And in the faraway Zagrjadye, the ancient dark goddess Virineya lifts her head. How can the daughter of a simple peasant survive in such a world—where a woman’s fate is predetermined from birth? Where marriage decisions are made by relatives, and at the whim of a husband you can be thrown onto a pyre. How to survive without breaking, without falling to evil forces? And not just to preserve yourself, but to understand—who you truly are.
