While sorting the archives of the Papal State in the Renaissance, Stendhal found many romantic stories that, in the 1830s, he prepared for publication under the title “Italian Chronicles.” A separate edition of these stories was published in 1855.
In Stendhal’s chronicles, there are depictions of the popular struggle for Italy’s independence over a long period—from the Renaissance through to the beginning of the 19th century—as well as strong female characters.
