Alexandra Osipovna Ishimova (1804–1881) — a Russian children’s writer, translator, and publisher of children’s journals. “History of Russia in Stories for Children” is her main book, which brought her nationwide fame. The book reflects all the most important events of Russian history—from the earliest times to the beginning of the reign of Nicholas I. Before starting the work, Ishimova studied all the sources on Russian history available at the time, and above all “The History of the Russian State” by N. M. Karamzin, which formed the basis for her future work. “... ‘The History’ by Mrs. Ishimova is an important acquisition for Russian literature: so richly composed with her other merits, among which the first place is taken by an excellent account and a beautiful language—revealing a firm hand, literary experience, a thorough study of the subject, and tireless diligence.” V. G. Belinsky “... Today I accidentally discovered your History in Stories and, involuntarily, I read on. Here’s how one should write! With the deepest respect and complete devotion, I have the honor to be, most gracious lady, your obedient servant, January 27, 1837.” A. S. Pushkin
