Description
The main plot of the book is the struggle of Good and Evil, purity and sin. The work’s hero, I. S. Shmelev’s fifteen-year-old gymnasium student—the “poor knight”—enters this struggle.

The blue radiance in the sky, scattering sparkle of drops beyond the bare poplars of the garden, gurgling in the icy puddles, golden puddles in the yard with ducks splashing in them; the first grass by the fence that you stare at and stare at; a thaw patch in the garden bringing something new—black earth and little crosses of chicken feet—an astonishing gleam of glass and the flutter of “bunnies”; the joyful ringing on Easter, red-blue balls bumping into each other in the breeze, through the thin skin of which you could see red and blue trees and countless blazing suns… everything mixed together in a wondrous, ringing brilliance.
