Boris Kuznetsov’s “Historical Miniatures”—little-known pages of the past in incredibly engaging stories.
Everyone has memorized the well-turned phrase: history does not tolerate the conditional mood. But that fatal knowledge doesn’t make things any easier or calmer. And still, in the mind, something pops up—“what if…”
To fantasize about scenarios of major historical events is, frankly, very difficult—and sometimes just plain disgusting. But in the archives of history there are strange facts, surprising biographies, and chains of events that don’t fit the familiar picture of the past. Perhaps that’s where the unmanifested possibilities are hidden—and perhaps those very things are worth considering as the seeds of an alternative “conditional” history?
At the very least, it’s an intriguing pastime that adds depth and fills the “real historical process” with living details.
