“Confessions” is Rousseau’s most outstanding work. It is not only an autobiography, but also an 18th-century novel. The goal of the book is “… to show my fellow beings one person in all the truth of his nature,” in all his unique individual character.
With utmost sincerity and ruthless truthfulness, Rousseau bares his heart, “… all his most secret thoughts…,” not being afraid to tell “… the most disgusting things about himself…”.
