Description
“The Spanish Ballad” (in the original, the book is titled “The Jewess of Toledo”) is the penultimate novel by L. Feuchtwanger. It was written in 1954 and published in 1955.

“The Spanish Ballad” is a poetic tale of the love of the Castilian king Alfonso VIII for the daughter of a Sevillian merchant, Raqel. The novel’s plot, taken from old Spanish chronicles, inspired many writers and poets, but only Lion Feuchtwanger indicated the close connection of the lovers’ fate with the fate of their country. Telling about the past, Feuchtwanger remains a relevant, modern writer. This book is about great human love that triumphs over the darkness of prejudice and superstition, over petty self-serving calculations and large-scale political intrigues.
