A direct heir to the novels of Adalbert von Chamisso, Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, Clemens Brentano, and E. T. A. Hoffmann. The date of its publication is 1838. The first chapters were published in «Sovremennik» in 1837; the proceeds were intended for the orphaned Pushkin family.
