William Sydney Porter, better known as
O. Henry, is a writer who shines with sparkling
humor and boundless fun: accessible and understandable to everyone, yet at the same time subtle and complex. He was born in North Carolina. After school he studied as a pharmacist, worked in a pharmacy, and later as a cashier-accountant in a bank. He was accused of embezzlement, convicted, and sent to prison, where he spent three years. In prison he took the pen name O. Henry. His first book of
short stories, “Kings and Cabbage,” was published in 1904. Then came: “Four Million,” “The Unquenchable Lamp,” “Heart of the West,” “The Noble Jerk” and others.
