In most circles Ingmar Bergman is known as a great director—and not just great, but the greatest. In culture he’s a deity, before whom people don’t only bow their heads, but feel something close to religious awe. Others, however, insist just as firmly that he is the most effective brake on our cultural life—a national monument that ought to be included in demolition plans. After several weeks of working on this article, we’re completely sure of at least one thing: everyone has an opinion about Ingmar Bergman, but only a few people have the courage to voice it.
