Family ties, honor, and a sense of duty often clash, reshaping human destinies. But in 1870 two boys still don’t know this. Young cousins live in Paris under siege by the Prussian army; they are very close to each other, yet soon their paths will split. Tragic events will force one to flee to his mother’s homeland, North Africa, to the warlike Tuaregs; family disgrace will force the other into service in an army detachment escorting a distant expedition.
