Description
Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky is one of the greatest Russian writers and thinkers, author of world-famous novels “Crime and Punishment,” “The Brothers Karamazov,” and “The Idiot.” Friedrich Nietzsche wrote that Dostoyevsky was the only psychologist from whom he could learn something (“Twilight of the Gods”). “The Gambler” is the story of an all-consuming passion for gambling that even the writer himself had. The fate of the main character and the circumstances of his life are in many ways similar to the author’s life in that period. Critics called the novel “The Gambler” “a story of ordinary madness,” while Dostoyevsky characterized his hero this way: “He is a poet in his own way, but… he himself is ashamed of this poetry, because he deeply feels its baseness…”.
