Hide and Seek

During the Great French Revolution, the fates of three women—Hortense, an aristocrat; Sophie, a worker; and her sister, Lara the maid—interweave in a strange way. After their father’s death, the sisters move from Marseille to the outskirts of Paris, where they find work at the wallpaper factory of Wilhelm Oberst, whose wallpapers are known for intricate patterns. Sophie falls in love with Joseph, the owner’s son, but Joseph is taken with Lara, who reminds him of the mother depicted on those antique wallpapers—who died under mysterious circumstances. Nevertheless, Joseph marries Hortense, a native of the Louvre. Meanwhile, the atmosphere in both the Oberst château and the factory—and in revolutionary Paris itself—grows increasingly threatening. Each of the women has her own reasons to fear for her life and to hide. Will they be able to escape the bloody whirlwind of events?
