Description
Young Prince Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin returns to Russia from Switzerland, where he had been treated for a serious illness. After several years spent in isolation, Myshkin finds himself in Petersburg society—steeped in hatred, envy, and malice. The prince pities these people, sees that they are being destroyed, and tries to save them—but despite all his efforts, he can change nothing. Lev Nikolayevich is endowed with Christian love and kindness; he sincerely wants to bring peace. Yet the lack of spirituality and disbelief in modern society become an insurmountable obstacle to achieving this goal. Alongside Cervantes’ Don Quixote and Dickens’ Mr. Pickwick, Dostoevsky’s tragicomic hero—the embodiment of moral beauty—belongs among the greatest idealistic figures of world literature.

In the end, can society determine someone’s degree of “normality”? So who among us is Prince Myshkin?
