Among the dark forests and swamps of the Moscow region lies the anomalous zone of Shushmor. For centuries, inexplicable phenomena occurred here: travelers disappeared, people drowned—but the paranormal fame of the region only pulls researchers, tourists, and… filmmakers more and more. During the filming of a historical movie, an incident happened: so-called swamp mummies surfaced from the peat bog. The terrible discovery drew many attention; society is stirred and asks: who were the people whose remains were preserved by the bottomless mire? Maxim Rayenwald, an investigator for especially important cases, suspects these are victims of a mass murder. And it’s unknown what draws the investigator more to the film location—the desire to uncover the truth or interest in a beautiful actress who reciprocates his sympathy. During the investigation, a wide variety of theories about the origin of the “bog people” are voiced. But the truth that Rayenwald has approached is so startling that he even shudders—after all, over the years of his career he has seen a great deal.
