This book is compared to Joseph Heller’s and Kurt Vonnegut’s novels, noting the author’s talent for mixing irony, absurdity, melancholy, and loneliness in such proportions that the narrative both moves and captivates, and gives plenty to think about.
The main character, Paul O’Rourke, is a wonderful dentist, a zealous atheist, and a fan of the “Red Sox” baseball team; he’s a misanthrope and a cynic. One day, he discovers a website for his own dental clinic. He’s never created anything like that—if only because he has a complicated relationship with the Internet. And then it gets worse. In his name, all kinds of religious comments appear online about some ancient and almost extinct people with a rich spiritual heritage—Ulmachs. Is it a joke at his expense? Are they trying to get under his skin? Or maybe they’re giving him a chance to find peace of mind?
