A young Englishwoman Linda Martin arrives in France to become a governess for nine-year-old Philippe, Count de Valmy. Her charge is the owner of an ancestral castle and estate, which his uncle Léon manages. Linda senses an inexplicable tension among the inhabitants of the castle and tries to protect the boy from the uncle’s oppressive authority and the aunt’s cold indifference. Suddenly, her love for Léon’s son Raoul makes her life even more complicated. During a walk, Philippe is shot. This unsuccessful assassination attempt on his life makes Linda wonder what invisible drama is unfolding beneath the castle’s walls—and what role in that drama has been assigned to her.
