The book tells of the intersection of lives of an emigrant, Leo Gursky, and a teenager, Alma, named after a character from a lost manuscript. It’s a story of lost love, hope, and how art can connect completely different people. What could possibly unite a lonely old man and a girl bearing the name of the heroine of the novel—if they aren’t even acquainted and aren’t related? Leo Gursky has lived in New York for half a century after fleeing Nazi-occupied Poland. He entrusted his valuable manuscript—written as a love message to Alma—to a friend with whom he later lost contact. Believing he had lost the manuscript, the friend, and the beloved, Leo became a locksmith and leads a quiet life, unaware that fate is preparing an unexpected turn for him in the twilight of his years.
