This collection includes both early and more mature works by the talented science-fiction writer Larry Niven.
The book contains two short novels and thirteen short stories. All events take place in Known Space—a region the human race explores, but which is controlled by other races. The plots of the works share a common event basis. The author describes the future of Earthlings who have mastered travel to other planets and even other galaxies. Several stories are devoted to the exploration of Mars, including: “The Octopus’s Eye,” “How Heroes Die,” and “At the Bottom of a Pit.”
As a bonus, the collection also includes two essays—with a preface and a postscript by Larry Niven. The writer shares his reflections on the fantastic world he created over thirty-one years.
