Description
In 1707, the French writer Alain-René Lesage created his best-known work, “The Hunchbacked Devil.” The adventurous novel enjoyed incredible success among contemporaries and produced many imitations. It is said that in a Paris bookstore, two gentlemen fought with swords, trying to determine who would get the last copy. The main character of the novel is the devil Asmodeus, who transports a student to the highest tower of Madrid and with a wave of his hand tears off the roofs from all the houses to show the student the underside of life in Spanish Babylon. He tells him about prisoners, the insane, street passersby, writers, lovers, and other people—and his witty comments strip the student of his last illusions.
