An epic novel tells the fate of two sisters Bulaviny and their beloved men in the period from 1914 to 1920. But essentially, it’s not just a novel about love—it’s about people’s fates across the vastness of a crumbling and torn-apart Russian Empire.
The Sisters:
At the beginning of 1914 a young Dasha Bulavina arrives from Samara to St. Petersburg for law courses. She moves in with her sister Katya, who is married to the well-known attorney Smokovnikov. Soon Dasha meets engineer Ivan Ilyich Telegin.
Soon the First World War begins.
The Eighteenth Year:
The year of Russian revolutions ends—one thousand nine hundred and seventeen. Military years begin, a clash of forces tearing the country apart.
Dasha and Ivan, Katya and Vadim— all of them are scattered across roaring war-torn Russia. They find themselves far from each other, and even on opposite sides of the front.
A Cloudy Morning:
All over Russia, fighting continues between those who want to bring back the old and those who believed in the power and truth of the new order.
Military roads finally bring Dasha and Ivan Ilyich together on the Tsaritsyn front, but Katya and Roshchin won’t meet for a long time. In the end, fate brings everyone to Moscow.
