Hobbit Bilbo Baggins and 13 dwarves set out on a quest for the dwarves’ treasures captured by the dragon Smaug and dumped in the cave of “Lonely Mountain,” Erebor.
The hobbit and the dwarves are helped by Gandalf, Beorn, mountain eagles, and elves.
Bilbo, who at the beginning of the journey was only in the way for the dwarves, later repeatedly came to their rescue in difficult situations. At last, the dwarves managed to reach the mountain and find the entrance to the cave. Bilbo stole from Smaug the precious cup, enraging the dragon. In a fury, Smaug burned the city of Esgaroth, but was killed by an arrow shot by the man-archer Bard. The dwarves got their treasures, but now people and elves laid claim to them. Thorin refused to share and asked for help from his relative Dain, who arrived at Erebor with an army of dwarves. But at that time, suddenly, people, elves, and dwarves all had a common enemy—the mountain was attacked by an army of goblins. The Battle of the Five Armies began, in which the goblins were defeated with great difficulty. Among the dead were Thorin and his nephews Fili and Kili. After the victory, people, elves, and dwarves reconciled and divided the treasures among themselves.
