Shed: How I Built Myself a New Life

Shed: How I Built Myself a New Life

Description
At twenty-five, Patrick Hutchison dreamed of moving mountains, but in reality he wrote advertising copy for plumbing fixtures and every day was weighed down by a suffocating sense of emptiness and pointlessness. Then, unexpectedly, a solution arrived on its own: he bought a cabin in the mountains of the northwestern United States to move closer to nature and live by the work of his own hands.

The problem was that Patrick didn’t know how to be a carpenter, and his “home” turned into a string of trials: a leaking roof, crooked floors, and whole armies of spiders. Over six years filled with ridiculous missteps and small victories, he traded his office chair for work gloves—and learned again to appreciate simple joys: when the door shuts without kicking it, when the chainsaw starts on the first pull, and when socks stay dry.

“Cabin” is an honest and very funny story about how a big adventure begins with self-irony, a couple of true friends, and the determination to take a step into the unknown.
