The Governor

Contemporaries called L. Andreev “the Sphinx of the Russian intelligentsia.” Andreev was one of the most well-known—and even now, still unread—authors of the early 20th century. The intellectual foundation of Andreev’s work was formed by the writings of A. Schopenhauer, F. Nietzsche, and F. Dostoevsky. And the quintessence of the writer’s moods was a tragedy of a lonely person who, having lost faith in God, found himself facing the Absurd.
