The story was written in 1924. The main theme is a person’s lack of a boundary between conscience and dishonor. This is shown through the example of a provocateur called Karamorа. The author’s ambivalent attitude toward the revolution is reflected in a number of his works from the Soviet period. This story, like “The Hermit,” “Blue Life,” and “A Story About the Extraordinary,” caused a great stir. They reflected not only the author’s interest in the realities of life, but also in the interaction of social and natural in a person. Critics wrote: “Gorky now pays so much attention to rogues and oddballs. And with them, it’s not only curiosity, but also love… He loves tangled people.”
