In the center of Moscow, on Red Square, stands a monument known to everyone who has ever been in our capital. It was erected in 1818 according to the design of the outstanding Russian sculptor I. P. Martos, using public funds. On the pedestal there is an inscription: “To the citizen Minin and Prince Pozharsky, grateful Russia.” The monument vividly reminds us of the ominous events of 1611–1612, of the great feat of the Russian people who rose up in a single surge against the enemies and defended their independence.
