The novel’s events unfold in the near future in a country in a semi-wartime state where the death penalty is applied. The main character, Yevgeny, is a young and talented man who is interested in the theme of death. He works as a guard at a place where executions are carried out. Yevgeny is familiar with death but knows little about life. He is about to face a story of crime and punishment that will affect not only his own life, but also the lives of his loved ones: his younger brother, opposition activist Tatyana, and a conformist. “Say” is a story about how the environment can influence a person. The novel makes you think about how the fear of death and conscience can destroy human life.
